What are Lighting Connectors?

Lighting connectors are industrial-grade plugs that are used to connect lighting devices to a power supply. Lighting connectors are used in a variety of industries, but are most prevalent in the events industry where they are used for stage illumination purposes. The most common type of lighting connector plugs are known as 19-pin connectors. Like any connector, lighting connectors come in either male or female forms. Certain fixtures and assemblies containing several lamps utilize a mounter connector that bypass the need for an independent breakout. Additionally, many such fixtures incorporate a female connector to enable further similar fixtures to be chained from the same source.

Stage lighting, where lighting connectors are heavily relied upon, refers to the task of lighting as it applies to the production of theatre, dance, opera, and other performing arts. Many different types of stage lighting equipment are used to carry this out. Beyond basic lighting, modern stage lighting can also include special effects such as lasers, fog machines, and similar things. The equipment used in stage lighting (such as cabling, dimmers, lighting instruments, and controllers) is used in a variety of other lighting applications such as corporate events, concerts, trade shows, television and film production, photography, and more. The personnel who work on lighting are known as lighting technicians.

There are a variety of types of lighting connectors depending on their use. Showsafe connectors, a well-known brand of electrical connectors, are used in the entertainment industry mainly for their 19-pin electrical connectors. They are also known as Socapex connectors. These lighting connectors are used in film, television, and stage lighting to terminate the ends of a multicable. They are wired with six hot (live) pins, six neutral pins, six ground pins, and a final central pin which aids alignment of the male end of the connector to the female end. An essential tool to supplement lighting connectors is the splitter unit. This allows intricate setups to distribute power throughout an entire event. These tools are designed with tough rubber molding to ensure it can withstand harsh environments and supply the necessary power to operate lighting.
